[Ingredients]
- Rice cakes: 4 cups (400g)
- Wheat flour cakes: 4 cups (400g)
- Square fish cakes: 4 pieces (160g)
- Cabbage: 2 cups (160g)
- Green onions: 3 cups (240g)
- Water: 1L
- Boiled eggs: 3
- Gochujang (Korean chili paste): 1/3 cup (80g)
- Jin ganjang (Korean soy sauce): 1/3 cup (50g)
- Fine Korean chili powder: 1/3 cup (30g)
- Coarse Korean chili powder: 1/3 cup (20g)
- Yellow sugar: 1/3 cup (70g)
- MSG: 1/2 tbsp (5g) (Optional)
[Instructions]
1. Prepare the ingredients
- Slice the green onions diagonally or lengthwise in half.
- Cut the cabbage and fish cakes into bite-sized pieces.
- Rinse the rice cakes lightly under running water to remove excess starch.
- Pour 1L of water into a large pot and add jin ganjang, yellow sugar, gochujang, coarse chili powder, and fine chili powder. Mix well.
- Add green onions and cabbage, then bring to a boil over high heat to make the broth.
3. Add the rice cakes and eggs
- Once the broth boils, add the prepared rice cakes and boiled eggs, and simmer over medium heat.
- Simmer until the rice cakes are soft and the ingredients have absorbed the sauce well.
- When the rice cakes are almost cooked, add the sliced fish cakes.
- Add a small amount of MSG for extra savory flavor (optional).
5. Adjust the consistency
- When the sauce has thickened and the rice cakes and ingredients are evenly coated, turn off the heat.
- Finally, check the seasoning and adjust as needed.
Finishing and Serving
- Serve the finished Tteokbokki on a large plate and garnish with extra green onions if desired.
- Serving with fish cake skewers, boiled eggs, or cheese will make the Tteokbokki even more fulfilling.
